Welcome to our new column, “Food As Medicine!”

Hi! My name is Carrie Bruno. I am a pharmacist, Certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional, and PBNM Board Member.

After spending over a decade studying and practicing pharmacy, I was sure I had all the skills and knowledge necessary to educate people about managing their chronic illnesses. Little did I know just how little I knew about helping people stay healthy.

That all changed in 2017, when I started learning about plant-based nutrition. Then, it was as if I got the most important piece to the puzzle. Suddenly everything made sense! Adopting a whole food plant-based diet was just the start of my plant-based journey. Nutrition and dietary health, literally food as medicine, quickly became my passion. So, in 2020, I obtained a plant-based nutrition certificate from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, followed by attaining Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in 2021.

My goal in writing this Food As Medicine column is to use all I know about pharmacy, lifestyle medicine, and nutrition to help people prevent, treat and even reverse chronic illnesses rather than just manage them. The column will emphasize the power that food has for our overall health by illustrating how specific foods can be used as medicine. My favorite quote from Hippocrates sums this concept up perfectly: “The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it.”
