Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine

Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine with Donna Meyer

Last week, we invited Donna Meyer to discuss her experiences with medicine and a plant-based diet. For most of Donna Meyer’s nursing career, she worked in an inpatient hospital setting in Southern WI. For most of those years, Donna was an Inpatient Cardiac Rehab nurse, educating patients and their family members about heart disease and its recovery, as well as cardiovascular disease risk reduction. Over the past several years, she has obtained certifications in the Lifestyle Medicine space including:

– eCornell Plant-based nutrition certificate

– ACLM Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner certification

– Rouxbe Plant-based Professional Culinary certificate

– Board-Certified Nurse Coaching certification

After over 27 years working in a hospital, Donna has transitioned out of her Inpatient Cardiac Rehab role and now has an exciting practice as a Nurse Coach. As a nurse coach, she provides life coaching and health and wellness coaching to people from any background or profession…not just nurses.

Rollercoaster Dieting

Like many people, Donna Meyer was no stranger to rollercoaster dieting. At times, she got overwhelmed and returned to the SAD. At other times, she tried almost all the fad diets, with little long-term results. It wasn’t until she went plant-based that she saw real change.

Going Plant-Based

When Donna Meyer went plant-based, she was finally able to see her weight go down without having to put a great deal of thought into what she was eating. No more calorie counting or macronutrient mathematics. Just clean, nourishing food.

Applying Lifestyle Medicine

For most of Donna Meyer’s nursing career, she worked in an inpatient hospital setting in Southern WI. For most of those years, Donna was an Inpatient Cardiac Rehab nurse, educating patients and their family members about heart disease and its recovery, as well as cardiovascular disease risk reduction.

In her work, she saw how much of an impact lifestyle played on the health of her patients. Specifically, how changes to lifestyle can prevent and even reverse chronic disease. Lifestyle and risk reduction can actually address the cause of these chronic conditions.

How Health Systems Have Shifted

Many health systems have begun to align with the message of the power of the plant-based diet. Many hospitals are beginning to offer plant-based meals, supplements, and tube-feeds for their patients.
