Supporting Our Children with Maya Acosta

Last week, we were joined by Maya Acosta to discuss supporting our community’s children.  Maya is a co-leader of the Plant-Based DFW Pod located in Dallas, TX. For years Maya has been passionate about helping everyday people understand that they have the power to upgrade their health. Her outreach work first began at her husband’s vascular center. Maya formed the organization called Plant-Based DFW where she and her husband Dr. Riz offered lectures, potlucks, documentary screenings, and walks with the doc in order to educate the community about the benefits of adopting a whole food plant-based lifestyle.

Today, her podcast Healthy Lifestyle Solutions offers additional support with guests such as plant-based physicians, dietitians, health coaches, and chefs who speak about the benefits of consuming a plant-based diet. She has also invited everyday people to share their testimonies on how plant-based nutrition has halted, and, in some cases, reversed disease.

Maya creates content for their YouTube channel as another way to share information with her Pod. The channel includes Podcast interviews, lectures, food demos, videos on the benefits of lifestyle medicine, and videos on how to grow your own green leafy vegetables using a hydroponics system.

When Maya’s Health Started Changing

Maya spent most of her life eating fish, but she noticed changes in her health in her thirties. She had low energy and had to nap constantly. It was after being told she had the health of a 50 year old that she realized she needed to make a change.

How a Plant-Based Diet Improved Maya’s Health

When Maya went plant-based, her energy improved, her skin cleared up, and she saw an overall improvement in health. After seeing how Maya’s health and well-being improved on a plant-based diet, her husband also made the decision to make the switch.

Stuck in Survival

Many of Maya’s students were struggling with issues more important than learning in class. Housing insecurity, food insecurity – the instability of their lives makes many stuck in survival.

The Power of a Community Garden

One year, the school Maya worked at did a community garden project. For many of her students, this was the first time they had actually grown something. Many families don’t have the space or resources to garden or grow their own food. For many children, growing their own food can be an incredibly exciting and rewarding experience.
