Nutrition and Cooking Classes—Class Three of Four: How Food Fights Heart Disease

October 15, 2025 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm CDT

Join Licensed Food for Life Instructor Barbara Chwierut for Class Three of Four on Nutrition and Cooking.

This class will focus on heart disease and the discovery that this disease can be virtually eliminated by controlling lifestyle factors. Researchers have determined that a plant-based diet may be nearly as effective as some cholesterol-lowering medications. This diet has also been shown to lower blood pressure, as well as remove the plaque that has built up in the arteries over time. It’s never too late to start that removal process!

Janet Pearson, a Building Healthy Communities Leader with PCRM, will provide oil-free cooking tips. Discover easy ways to sauté, air fry, bake, and roast without oil for low-calorie, heart-healthy meals.

Classes are free of charge. Contact Orland Park at

Walk-Ins also welcome for these in-person classes!

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, headquartered in Washington, DC. Their efforts are dramatically changing the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. By putting prevention over pills, doctors are empowering their patients to take control of their own health.
Food for Life (through PCRM) is an award-winning nutrition education and cooking class program that provides an innovative approach to diet-related chronic diseases. These classes deliver hands-on information about the direct role of plant-based nutrition in health and disease prevention to communities around the world. They are carried out by a licensed Food for Life instructor.
The classes are designed by physicians, nurses, and registered dietitians and promote healthy eating based on the latest scientific research. Each Food for Life class includes:

  • Specific information about how certain foods and nutrients work to promote or discourage
    disease.
  • Recipes which will be shared and demonstrated via cooking videos.
  • Practical cooking skills and tips for incorporating healthy eating habits into daily life.
  • A supportive and motivational atmosphere to empower participants to take charge of their health
with the foods that are put on their plates.
