Opening Ceremony for a Lifestyle Center in Elgin, IL

The opening ceremony for the Salient Lifestyle Center, the first of its kind in Illinois, will occur on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 6:30 PM, at 1141 Bode Road, Elgin, IL (left wing of the Adventist Church).

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the importance of a healthy lifestyle, as most complications have occurred in those with chronic medical conditions. The leading causes of death worldwide are chronic diseases, with over 1,000,000 deaths in the United States alone. However, 40% of cancer deaths and 80% of cardiovascular deaths are preventable by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Motivated by the urgent need for lifestyle education in our society, we have established a lifestyle center, the first of its kind in the state of Illinois, called Salient Lifestyle Center.

Salient Center does not replace primary medical care but provides lifestyle education that complements the medical community’s effort to treat illness and restore health.

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Salient Center aims to foster and restore complete well-being in the Northwestern Chicago suburbs and beyond.

Salient Center will provide educational programs in healthy lifestyle based on the eight principles of CREATION Life, developed by Florida Hospital in Orlando, and the six pillars of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Dr. Ashwani K. Garg, MD, certified in lifestyle medicine by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, volunteers to educate patients in groups and individually and coordinate all lifestyle programs. He completed his medical training at Northwestern University Medical School and residency training at Hinsdale Adventist Hospital in Family Medicine. Dr. Garg has completed additional training in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Institute for Nutrition. He is currently a clinical associate professor at North Central College.

Salient Center will partner with local and national organizations that share our core principles to implement lifestyle change, such as evidence-based Food For Life by PCRM, and organizations providing lifestyle coaching, depression and addiction recovery, and group support programs. Salient Center aims to become a lifestyle rotation site for healthcare students in the area.

The Opening Ceremony for the Salient Lifestyle Center will occur immediately after the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Salient Garden

The Salient Community Garden is a one-acre fruit, vegetables, and flowers garden intended to foster community by working alongside family, friends, and neighbors to plant and harvest together. The Salient Garden is for all generations.

There are vast benefits of having a community garden, such as food production, improved nutrition, exercise, improving the environment, mental health, and expanding education and training in horticulture. A garden can be a place to meditate or enjoy quiet moments. One study indicates that gardens reduce crime and provide a safe place for youth to explore nature and community.

Dr. Terri Dallas-Prunskis and Dr. Silvia Abel-Caines, who coordinate the Salient Community Garden, will help all gardeners at every step of the way to have an enjoyable experience and a plentiful harvest.

The Groundbreaking for the Community Garden and Opening of the Lifestyle Center will take place on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at 1141 Bode Road, Elgin, IL
