Children’s Health Summit

Have you ever wondered why there is a growing health crisis AMONG OUR CHILDREN? Do you worry about how to protect your kids or grandkids and keep them from getting sick with the diseases that may run in your family?

Reverse Chronic Illness – DESI Style

PBNM proudly hosted presentations by and discussions with Dr. Soham Patel and Dr. Ashwani Garg regarding several chronic diseases that plague many of us, but are particularly endemic in the Asian/Pacific communities. View entire presentation on YouTube here!

2021 Annual National Health Association Conference

These conferences have energized generations of plant-based enthusiasts.  Each year we reconnect with science-based evidence and with each other, and we leave with renewed zeal to do better and be healthier.

Dr. Kim Williams Presents Covid-19 Mortality and Nutrition

To call his presentation profoundly informative would be an understatement. Dr. Williams began with a plea to each of us to take the information he shares directly to our own healthcare providers. As he points out, “the leading cause of death among physicians, including cardiologists, is heart disease.” Even though there is considerable evidence in the scientific literature, physicians learn almost nothing about using nutrition to prevent or reverse illness in their medical training.

Chicagoland – Connect with us on Meetup

Hey, Chicagoland! We invite you to join our Meetup – https://www.meetup.com/Chicagoland-Plant-Based-Nutrition-Movement/ and feel free to join in on any events that are of interest to you! The events on our Meetup Calendar are very assorted and include such things as:

Educational/support type groups (most are “voluntary potlucks” where participants are encouraged to bring a whole food plant-based no oil dish to pass. Bringing a dish is generally not required, but serves to both give participants some “practice” at preparing a WFPB-NO dish, but also to introduce a variety of delicious foods to other participants
Cooking Classes
Educational speakers
Picnics/potlucks
Documentary film screenings
Health immersions
…and more
While most of the events on our Meetup Calendar are PBNM.org events, we are also pleased to help expose our members to events hosted by others, but which are aligned with our specific objective, which is, of course, to provide our members with as much useful information and as many resources as possible about the power of a whole food plant-based dietary pattern to promote optimal health. Such events will indicate who is actually conducting the event.

AMA Resolution 203

This past weekend I had the pleasure to support American Medical Association resolution 203 to remove the requirement for a child to have a physician‘s note to receive a non-dairy milk alternative in school and to reword the Dietary Guidelines for Americans stating that meat and dairy are “options“ but not necessary or required while supporting whole plant foods as sources of protein, calcium and iron. As a plant based cardiologist I find this absolutely crucial.

I stood along side Dr. Neal Barnard of PCRM, Dr. Kim Williams, Dr. Michael Klaper, and Dr. Terry Mason among others as I represented Chicagoland’s Plant Based Nutrition Movement.

The AMA Board approved the resolution paving the way to a stronger recommendation towards a plant based diet.

At the meeting, so many physicians approached the microphone to speak in support of the resolution that the chairman had to cut off “pro” statements and asked for “con” statements…no significant “con” arguments were presented. GO PLANTS!

PBNM PlantPure Jumpstart

The Plant Based Nutrition movement would like to share with the community one of the many initiatives of the group called “Jumpstarts”. As seen in the well known documentary PlantPure Nation which can be viewed free online here, a jumpstart brings healthy plant based meals into underserved communities or those with high rates of chronic diseases and then documents the dramatic health impact they have in a short period of time.

The PBNM has applied for its first grant throught the PlantPure Oasis Jumpstart program. This initiative through PBNM is spearheaded by Sandra Meister, A Registered Dietitian with the School-based “Tomcat” Health Center at East Aurora High School (EAHS) in IL.

She attended the very first Plant Based Nutrition Movement meetup in May and was introduced to Dr. Steven Lome for the first time. She was captivated by the details of his health journey as a Cardiologist, initially focused on fixing hearts through procedures and medication to promoting heart disease prevention through nourishing plant-based whole foods.
