Entertaining plant based chef/instructor
As a masters-prepared nurse with over 20 years of wellness experience, Joan thought I knew about nutrition—until her active, seemingly healthy husband had a sudden, totally unexpected heart attack. It was then she discovered the emerging body of research exploring the connection between diet and chronic disease. She couldn’t learn enough and gobbled up nutritional studies as avidly as her new found greens, grains and beans diet!
After earning her certificate in plant-based nutrition she began volunteering for Dr. Michael Greger’s NutritionFacts.org site.
Using her teaching background she has also developed programs that share the “why” and the “how” of eating whole plant foods.
As a former cruise lecturer, she has learned the value of “edutainment” so attempt to entertain while educating audiences, sharing the encouraging messages she has learned that getting old doesn’t have to mean getting SICK and that your genes are NOT your destiny.
She has developed the following programs which she has presented to over 40 community, college and library settings:
GREENS, GRAINS & BEANS: Promising Research and Successful Strategies for Whole Food Plant-based Nutrition (Initial program focusing on rationale/diet-chronic disease connection)
A PLANT/SLANT Plan Towards Better Nutrition (Tips for implementing plant based strategies when shopping, cooking and eating out)
Entering the BLUE ZONE-How to Live Vibrantly into Your 90’s and Beyond
FAKE NEWS: NUTRITION EDITION – Deciphering the Wild Claims from Legitimate Evidence-based Nutrition News.
Her husband continues to enjoy vibrant health and she continues to share the Whole Food Plant-based message, whether holding up healthy harvest specials or tracking down Blue Zones or Fake News!
