If you’ve read the blog posts here this year, you know the new law mandating plant-based lunch availability in all Illinois schools goes into effect this month. I was re-re-reading the law yesterday. It says a plant-based lunch will be provided with prior request and it applies to all
Illinois schools.
A couple of terms in the law could use clarification for the average parent or caregiver:
- What do they mean by “plant-based”? Is it 100% plant only or is it 90%? Is cow’s milk supplied or will the student have soymilk available? Would it be a black bean burger made with chicken broth?
- What do they mean by “prior notice”? how much prior notice? A day? A week? A month? And by what means? Spoken, written, email, electronic form submission?
- To whom do parents and care givers submit the request? The principal? The School Board? The Superintendent? How do you find that person
To help clear the confusion about how this law will roll out, PBNM, Balanced and Coalition for Healthy School Food are collaborating to put on a webinar for School Food Service Directors and Personnel and anyone else interested in the “service side” of the law.
